#GivingTuesday 2018

What is #GivingTuesday?

Learn for Life Kenya is excited to be participating once again in #GivingTuesday, a global day of giving that harnesses the collective power of individuals, communities, and organizations to encourage philanthropy and to celebrate generosity worldwide. Following Thanksgiving and the widely recognized shopping events Black Friday and Cyber Monday, this year’s #GivingTuesday will take place on November 27th and will kick off the giving season by inspiring people to collaborate and give back.

#GivingTuesday in Kenya

Since its 2012 launch in New York City, #GivingTuesday has grown into a worldwide movement, celebrating the generosity of giving to others. This month, 42 countries, including Kenya (#GivingTuesdayKe), invite participants to join their own independently-led, official #GivingTuesday movements.

The movement was launched in Kenya 3-years ago and continues to grow. Since inception, over 60 organizations have joined #GivingTuesdayKe to profile, encourage and celebrate the culture of local philanthropy in East Africa. This year’s #GivingTuesdayKe campaign seeks to inspire people to give more and give better while celebrating those who give their time, money and voice to support local communities. We are proud to be a part of this movement here in the United States as well as with our partners in Kenya.

Our #GivingTuesday Campaign

Since we aim to provide opportunities for vocational training that will help young people in Kenya become employed and productive citizens, this #GivingTuesday we are raising $3,500 for a special hairdressing training opportunity for the youth residing at orphanages run by our partner, the Tumaini Children’s Ministry, in Nyeri, Kenya. We will be collecting donations for this campaign through December 4, 2018.

Hard realities in Kenya, like a 70% youth unemployment rate and the high cost of education, leave youth vulnerable, especially those who grew up in orphanages and must fend for themselves upon leaving. Young people need marketable skills to provide for themselves.

Our #GivingTuesday campaign focuses on providing training for the students who will soon leave the orphanage. About 20 students will learn the basic skills needed to provide hairdressing/barber services in their communities, thus providing a reliable source of income upon graduation. Receiving such specialized training before graduation equips them for the job market or professional certification; both paths lead to a more self-sustaining, dignified future!

Our #GivingTuesday fundraising goal is $3500. Funds raised during the campaign will: 1) pay local trainers to provide training on-sight at the orphanage; 2) purchase permanent equipment and supplies for this and future training sessions; 3) purchase equipment (scissors, clippers) that will be gifted to students completing training; and 4) facility renovations for adequate training.

Our goal is to start training in Spring 2019.

Hairdressing at the Vocational Training Center

Once construction is complete on the Vocational Training Center (VTC), programs offering professional certification, such as hairdressing/barber services, will deliver training in highly marketable and relevant skills to the youth and surrounding community. At that point, hairdressing/barber training equipment will migrate to the VTC. Until then, Learn for Life Kenya is committed to utilizing available resources to provide meaningful training opportunities, now.
