October Newsletter: Harambee Time, "All Pull Together"

Vocational Training Center Harambee 2018

On October 7, 2018 our dear friends at Tumaini Children’s Ministry in Nyeri County held their annual Harambee, a Kenyan tradition of community development meaning “all pull together,” to raise funds for the Vocational Training Center building project.

We were thrilled to have our Co-Founder, Anne Muindi-Shemenski and Board Chair, Catherine Gacheru, in attendance at this fun-filled and inspiring event. “It was wonderful to be reconnected with the community where we grew up and all the people who played a significant role in our lives” said Anne. “Friends, we are glad to be on this journey together and are re-energized by our potential impact going forward.”

Also in attendance were special guests, County Governor Mutahi Kahiga (pictured above) and the County Women Representative Hon. Rahab Mukami. Their recognition fuels our excitement about the current relationships being established with the local government in support of the efforts at Tumaini. “My Government is committed to supporting less privileged children in the county, such as those of Tumaini Children’s Home, so that they are educated well like other children,” said Governor Kahiga.

It was truly a beautiful day of celebration filled with hope for the future. Check out all the awesome photos from the event on our flickr site.

3rd Annual Gala Dinner

We are pleased to report that our 3rd annual Gala Dinner in Alexandria, Virginia was a great success. A huge thank you to all who attended, made a donation, offered words of encouragement, and prayerfully supported this important event for our mission to expand the impact on the lives of marginalized youth in Nyeri, Kenya. Read all the event highlights here.

This year's Gala Dinner helped us complete our recent fundraising goal of $30,000. We are able to help our partners, the Tumaini Children's Ministry, add external walls to the Vocational Training Center's 4-story, 29,000 sq. ft frame.

The next building phase will include plumbing, electrical and drainage for the entire building, as well as stairwells, doors, and window casements. Please consider making a contribution so we can finish construction and implement certified training in skilled trades.

Fall is in the air and that means Giving Tuesday is right around the corner! Mark your calendar for this global day of giving and join millions around the world who will be making donations to their favorite charitable causes. Learn for Life Kenya will be raising funds for a special training opportunity for the older youth at Tumaini Children's Ministry. Stay tuned and follow our facebook page for all the project details!

Kona ya Marafiki (Friends' Corner)

This month, we feature Meadows Presbyterian Church of Charlottesville, VA. For years, this small congregation has done mighty things to enrich the lives of children and youth at Tumaini and Huruma Children's Home in Nyeri, Kenya.

Their generous tithes and offerings have built an entire floor of the Vocational Training Center.

On their most recent trip to Nyeri in June, our friends took feminine hygiene kits to the young ladies so that they would not be forced to miss a week of school each month. They introduced them to the Days for Girls program. Now the girls can equip other girls with knowledge and supplies that will advance their chances for equal education, a first step towards furthering their future success in life.

Thank you, Meadows friends, for your continued generosity and kindness!
